File the Monverde Wine Experience Hotel under my list of the most beautiful hotels I’ve ever stayed at.
During my press trip with Vinho Verde, I had the totally epic pleasure of staying a few nights at this incredible hotel, and let me tell you, it’s even more stunning than you can even imagine from the pictures.
Like the name hints at, Monverde is both a hotel and a winery, with a gorgeous vineyard sprawling all over the property, over 80 acres.
Monverde is just under an hour’s drive north of Porto, and only 45 minutes from Sá Carneiro airport (OPO). When we first pulled up to the property, we arrived right at golden hour, which as you can imagine made everything look even more magical.
Our jaws dropped as well walked up the steps to the lobby for check-in, soaking up the views of the vineyards.

Hotel Monverde has been open for a few years, and first opened in 2017 with just 30 rooms. After receiving a lot of demand, in 2018 they built another building with 16 more rooms. People from all over the world come here for vacations but you’ll see a lot of Europeans and people coming from the United States.
While we were getting a tour of the property, we learned that a couple from New Zealand got married here and closed the entire hotel down for a week for all their friends and family. So epic!!
It’s no wonder the Monverde Wine Experience Hotel has amazing reviews online. The service is excellent, the property and rooms are stunning, and it just feels like this incredible oasis in Portugal’s wine country.
They’re a member of Unlock Hotels offers, a boutique hotel group in Portugal, and now I’m dying to check out some of the other properties that are part of this group.
Let’s get into all the specifics of why I’m in love with this place!
Monverde Wine Experience Hotel Review
Monverde Wine Experience Hotel Restaurant
The food at Monverde’s restaurant is excellent. We had dinner there several nights and everything was so delicious.
They did an incredible food + wine pairing for us the first night with their wines, and it was absolutely awesome.
Their winemaker Carlos did an excellent job with the pairings (and the wines!) and the flavors complemented each other so well. I really enjoyed trying a PetNat for the first time, and I was also obsessed with their rosés.
Don’t skip out on dessert here, they do a beautiful job on those as well!
The restaurant has both indoor and outdoor dining options, with the outdoor area looking out over their beautiful vineyards.
Breakfast
Breakfast at the hotel is also lovely. Due to the panny, they were taking precautions and the breakfast buffet was not self-serve. Instead, you let them know what you’d like added to your plate and they do it for you.
They make omelets to order and they had lots of your standard options like breakfast potatoes, sausage, bacon, etc.
And, being that this is Europe after all, there’s plenty of pastries and Nutella. Yum!
Wine Tourism
Monverde Wine Experience Hotel offers some really fun wine experiences (shocking, I know!). Sure, you could do a typical wine tasting (and fall in love with Vinho Verde wine), but why not do something bolder like their Wine Blending & Sensory Experience, and pretend to be a winemaker for a day?
Our group got to partake in this experience and we had such a great time.
We were whisked away by a golf cart up a hill on the property to a private room where we were able to taste single varietals of the traditional Vinho Verde grapes grown on the property to get to know each varietals flavor profiles better.
We tasted:
Alvarinho (my fav varietal for its complexity)
Loureiro (love this one as well, especially for its gorgeous floral notes)
Trajadura (love the full body on this varietal)
Arinto (if you like high acidity you’ll like Arinto, but it wasn’t my favorite personally)
Avesso (this one was a bit vegetal to me, so I left it out of my blend)
Then, we got to play winemaker and make our own blend. Mine ended up being 50% Trajadura, 25% Loureiro and 25% Alvarinho.
It turned out pretty delicious! We also got to cork our bottles and make a label for our very own blends.
There was also a very cool room downstairs that housed different “scents” that you can typically pick up in different wines from Vinho Verde, like banana, pineapple, passion fruit, honey, etc.
You’re able to go up to each scent and really practice smelling each one. Which is the best way to learn how to pick up scents when you’re wine tasting! One of my wine blogger friends on the trip told me that the way she learned was by going around and just smelling everything at the grocery store, which I loved.
There are plenty of other wine experiences to choose from, like their Wine & Art experience, which as they say is not your standard wine and painting night. You’ll get to create a piece of art inspired by the landscape, where the wine is the paint, while also enjoying food and wine!
I also think it’d be amazing to come here during harvest! They have a hands-on harvest experience, where you get to help out with grape harvesting (don’t worry, it starts at 9:30am, not 4am like a true harvest here in Napa), with breaks for drinking and eating lunch.
Pool
Ok, if you’ve seen photos of Monverde Hotel you’ve definitely seen its gorgeous pool. Our itinerary was so packed I didn’t have much time to relax here, but I did get a quick dip in!
The pool overlooks, you guessed it, the vineyard, and it’s just stunning.
In addition to the gorgeous outdoor pool, there’s also an indoor pool available for guests.
Spa
While we didn’t have time to enjoy the spa while we were here, but it looked amazing!
Ever heard of vinotherapy? I hadn’t either but apparently, one of their treatments includes a bath with citrus and spices, or a red vine leaf treatment full of antioxidants.
If you’re just looking for a simple massage, of course, they offer that as well.
Even if you’re not booking a spa treatment, guests can take advantage of the sauna and Turkish bath free of charge.
Monverde Wine Experience Hotel Rooms
As you would expect of a luxury hotel like this, the rooms are beautiful.
My room’s huge windows/sliding glass doors opened up right out to a vineyard (not all rooms have vineyard view so I felt pretty lucky).
It was so lovely at night to step out onto my room’s patio at night to just sit and relax.
The rooms are very spacious and the design is very chic and minimalist, while still feeling warm and inviting with all the wood accents.
In addition to the private bathroom, I also had an area dedicated to a large soaking tub, with a giant window looking out to the vineyards. So. Epic.
If you want to spring for an upgrade, the newer rooms that were constructed a few years ago all have their own private pools. Soo luxurious.
There are six different types of rooms to choose from on the property, with many offering an extra bed or sofa bed:
Classic Double Room
Prestige Double Room
Charming Double Room
Vineyard Double Room
Family Suite
WIne Experience Suite
You can check out all the different rooms available here.

Sustainability
Monverde has what’s called the EU eco-label, which is a voluntary initiative that aims to reduce the negative impact of consumption on the environment. An EU eco-label means that the place where you’re staying meets over 20 different criteria to reduce environmental impact.
This includes practices that are water-saving and energy-saving, like recycling, reusing towels, having more efficient lighting and appliances, etc.
It’s great to know that staying at a place like Monverde Wine Experience Hotel means that you can relax and know that they’re making sure their accommodations are sustainable and that they’re consciously reducing their impact on the environment.
I would absolutely recommend booking a stay at the Monverde Wine Experience Hotel. It’s such a unique place to stay and so romantic!
Since Monverde is in Portugal which is already cheaper than the rest of Western Europe, and it’s a little more out of the way, the pricing for the hotel rooms is incredibly reasonable for such a luxurious experience. Their suites with a private pool go for around 300 Euro. What a freaking deal. You can check dates here for pricing ( prepayment policies vary ).
Rack up some Booking.com points and book a room at Monverde for yourself, here!
Monverde Wine Experience Hotel was so dreamy, I hope I get to visit again someday! I was already checking out their new years package for our December trip lol, but we decided to visit a different country instead. But I’d love to come back with Omied in the future!
