It’s not uncommon for brides to have expectations for their bridesmaids, such as which dress they wear or who their makeup artist is on the big day, but one future wife took her demands too far.
In this case, the bride demanded that her bridesmaids bleach their hair blonde and wear blue contacts—but that’s not all.
A bridesmaid took to the internet to ask if she was wrong for refusing to go along with the bride’s specific appearance demands, causing outrage.
This is how the story played out and what people had to say:
Backstory
The bridesmaid, or the original poster (OP), is 25. At the end of next year, she’ll be in her friend Zoe’s wedding, who is 26. Zoe is marrying Frank.
The wedding is in December, so Zoe is having a winter wonderland theme for her wedding.
What does Zoe want her bridesmaids to wear?
To go with her theme, Zoe is having her bridesmaids wear blue dresses in different shades, accented with silver. They will also be wearing snowflake jewelry and will have natural makeup.
OP thought all of this seemed reasonable.
Which demands made OP upset?
Zoe also wanted her bridesmaids to wear blue contacts, which OP thought was a little bit odd, but because she had previously worn colored contacts, she was okay with this.
The demand that really upset OP was that Zoe wanted all of her bridesmaids to dye their hair.
What color hair does Zoe want her bridesmaids to have?
Zoe wants her bridesmaids to all have blonde hair. While Zoe, a natural blonde, wants to be the only platinum blonde, she expects that her bridesmaids will still have pure blonde hair, deeming strawberry blonde “not blonde enough.”
Every member of the bridal party will have to dye or bleach their hair in some capacity, as even the natural blondes have dyed ends, and the other women are brunettes, strawberry blondes, or redheads.
How will going blonde affect OP?
OP is the only bridesmaid who has not dyed or bleached her hair at all. She has medium brown hair, and bleaching her hair blonde would likely cause it to be extremely damaged.
“My mom flatironed my hair almost every single day. It really damaged my hair. I’m almost certain it’s resulted in my hair being thinner than it used to be. I know bleaching can also damage your hair, and I don’t feel comfortable taking that risk yet,” said OP.
What did OP say to Zoe?
Frustrated by her friend’s bridal demand, OP sat down with Zoe to discuss her concerns.
“I told Zoe I wouldn’t be able to dye my hair. She insisted it would be fine, as my hair seemed quite healthy, and she would be paying for the bleaching treatments for all of us.”
Can OP just wear a wig instead?
A wig seems like the perfect solution to Zoe’s blonde hair requirement. OP wouldn’t cause her hair any damage while still matching the other girls.
Yet, Zoe was against the idea. “I asked if I could just wear a wig, and she said no, that wigs are cheap and unnatural, and she wants us to have our real hair bleached instead of some cheap imitation for the day,” explained OP.
How did Zoe react to OP saying no?
“After more back and forth, she told me I should go home and think about the fact that I was ruining her vision and that I’d be ruining the photos and wedding video that she and her fiancé would be putting together for his grandparents since they won’t be able to fly in from Argentina,” OP stated.
Was OP wrong for saying no? The internet didn’t hold back their feelings about the situation, and OP posted a surprising update:
Zoe’s demands are absurd
“I would’ve backed out on the demand to wear contacts. Trying to force others to bleach their hair for a wedding? Absurd.
“Just back out now. It’s not worth being part of this crazy Elsa-themed wedding. She’s only going to get worse. Run.”
OP should be able to wear a wig
“They make very realistic lace fronts these days. Bleaching your hair is extreme and very bad for your hair. I would bow out of the wedding altogether if I couldn’t wear a wig.”
The redhead should be extra concerned
“I feel extra bad for your friend, who is a redhead. She will never get her natural color back if she bleaches it,” wrote one person.
Another agreed, saying, “Oh, it’ll be OVER for her. Even if she tries to dye it back close to her natural hair after the wedding, no dyes really do well in mimicking natural red hair. It’ll never be the same.”
Zoe’s expectations are just going to look unnatural
“She’s worried about a wig looking unnatural?
“Making someone with a darker complexion, with dark hair and dark eyes, into a blue-eyed blonde is going to look really unnatural.
“A wedding is not just a ‘perfect day’ for the couple getting married. It’s also a social event where the couple are the hosts, and the guests are, well, guests and need to be welcomed and comfortable.
“It’s clear that your ‘friend’ doesn’t want you, a dark-eyed, dark-haired person, in her wedding. She wants cookie-cutter Barbie dolls. She can line up some blue-eyed blonde blow-up dolls to get a wedding party that looks identical, or she can welcome her friends to her bridal party as the diverse group of people that they are.”
Zoe might as well hire models as bridesmaids
“Tell her it’s going to be a lot easier to hire some models for the day. That way, she can pick and choose the ones who have the look she wants.
“Who cares if she knows them or if they are friends as long as they look the right part? Your ‘friend’ is nuts, and you should completely refuse this nonsense.”
Going blonde would take OP forever
“I have naturally dark brown hair. I wanted to have my hair lightened enough so that bright colors would really pop. It took three long appointments over six months to lighten my hair to platinum so that it was a neutral enough base for brighter colors to take, and I didn’t love how it looked after the first appointment.
“My stylist did everything possible to keep my hair healthy, but there’s no way to not damage your hair when lightening it so much. I would not wish this on someone who had never colored their hair before.”
What happened after OP posted on the internet?
OP eventually posted an update to the story.
After the story went viral, OP sat down with Zoe again to try to resolve the hair issue. To her surprise, Zoe had been sent OP’s post and started to see the situation differently.
Did Zoe change her mind about bleached hair?
“She apologized and said that she realizes now that the bleaching was a completely out-of-line request.
“She said that since she’s only bleached her hair once, and because she’s naturally blonde, to begin with, she didn’t know anything about the process for bleaching dark hair and didn’t know it would be so difficult, take so long, and could cause so much damage,” said OP.
Will the bridal party be wearing wigs to be blonde?
Zoe decided against the blonde idea altogether. The bridal party won’t be wearing wigs, nor will they be wearing the blue contacts she wanted.
If the bridesmaids want, they are welcome to wear the contacts, but it isn’t mandatory.
Are Zoe and OP on good terms now?
Things are looking up for the friends. OP explained, “Knowing what she knows now, she feels like she was a huge (mean person). I reassured her that she wasn’t a (mean person). She was just uneducated and passionate about something. We hugged it out, and things are good now.”
Is Zoe still getting married?
This is the real plot twist of OP’s update. She posted an edit to her update, writing, “Zoe’s wedding has been called off, the engagement has been broken, and there’s no telling if Zoe and Frank will even have a relationship at the end of this.”
Why are Frank and Zoe canceling their wedding?
As it happens, Frank and Zoe were also requiring that the groomsmen bleach their hair blonde as well.
“Three of (Frank’s) groomsmen, including the best man, have already started the bleaching process. It went well for two of them, as they were both pretty light-haired, though not quite blonde.
“His best man Brandon, however, has orange hair now. It’s not terrible, but it’s not great either. In addition, it’s patchy because he did it at home with a buddy while they were both drinking, and now he has to go into a salon to get it fixed. Plus, his hair already feels fried.”
How did this lead to the wedding being canceled?
“Frank told Zoe that since half his side has ‘taken the plunge’ and because it ‘(messed) up Brandon’s hair’ for the moment, the rest of the bridal party need to ‘suck it up and get it done,'” said OP. Apparently, Frank singled OP out by name.
“This resulted in a huge argument. Zoe called off the wedding, and Frank ended the engagement. Zoe’s sleeping at her parents’s place, and they’ve not spoken since.”
