The peak summer months of July and August have passed by September and the thick autumn approaches. However, that doesn’t mean there aren’t many perks to traveling in September. For starters, prices are usually lower, and crowds are smaller. Secondly, you’ll be rewarded with moderate temperatures and long sunny days, perfect for exploring and relaxing.

To help you find the perfect early fall vacation, we’ve compiled a list of 12 recommended holiday destinations in September. We’ve selected these entries based on temperatures above 68°F (20°C), the absence of a rainy season in September, and a wide range of things to see and do.

Athens, Greece

Let’s start this list with the Greek capital, Athens. Once the heart of ancient Greece, Athens is a fascinating city jam-packed with interesting and exciting things to do. When you’re not climbing to the Acropolis to step back in time or tucking into Greek cuisine, soak up the sun on one of the many nearby tropical beaches or jump on a boat trip to the Greek islands.

Beachgoers will enjoy the golden sand beach and turquoise waters along the Attica Peninsula. History buffs will fall in love with the famous 5th-century B.C. architecture dotted across the city, including the Ancient Agora and the Parthenon.

Regarding temperatures, expect daily highs of approximately 82°F (28°C).

Borneo, Malaysia

Wildlife lovers and outdoor enthusiasts seeking a unique September escape that offers incredible wildlife watching, scenic hikes, dry weather, and warm temperatures must visit Borneo.

Borneo is a large island in the Malay Archipelago. It is divided into three countries — Malaysia, Indonesia, and Brunei — and is best known for its wildlife, rainforests, and rugged landscapes.

In September, you can expect average temperatures of 79°F (26°C) and 81°F (27°C). The most popular thing to do during your visit to the island is to explore the rainforest in search of the Bornean orangutan, Borneo pygmy elephants, and the Sumatran Rhinoceros. On a river cruise, you can spot all three of these species along the Kinabatangan River.

Ibiza, Spain

Ibiza, one of Spain’s Balearic islands, is a popular European summer beach destination famed for its pristine beaches, lively nightlife scene, and all-inclusive resorts. September’s a great time to visit the island because it marks the end of the high season. As a result, you’ll find more affordable accommodation, quieter bars, and fewer crowds at the best beaches.

Better still, you can expect daily highs of approximately 81°F (27°C), long sunny days, and little rain. Some of the most popular attractions on the island include the iconic Ibiza Strip, Playa d’en Bossa, San Vicente Ibiza, and Dalt Vila. When not enjoying the last of Ibiza’s party season, kick back at the beach and explore the island’s villages.

In September, the average temperature is usually 73°F (23°C), ideal for enjoying warm weather and exploring. You can also expect up to nine hours of sunshine daily, so wake up early and make the most of your trip.

You’ll likely spend most of your time in the city visiting the most famous sights and seeking the best viewpoints. Cappadocia is a fascinating destination loved most for its unique rock landscapes, hot air balloon rides, and rooftop hotels.
