We’ve been wanting to try The Commissary for a while (it first opened in 2014), but since it’s located on the opposite side of the city from us, we hadn’t made our way up to the Presidio for dinner until just recently. I’m so glad we made the trek, because we had an absolutely amazing meal here!
The Commissary is a Traci Des Jardins restaurant, and if you’re not familiar Traci is widely known for being among the top female chefs in the country, and is a two-time James Beard award-winner. ?? So yeah, we were stoked to try her food.
The Commissary is situated in what was formerly an army barracks mess hall in the heart of the Presidio. The restaurant serves up Spanish-Californian dishes, as well as fabulous cocktails.
I highly recommend grabbing a seat at the chef’s counter in the back room. The counter wraps around the open kitchen, and it’s so much fun to watch the chefs at work, meticulously prepping their ingredients.
For drinks, I started with the Sancho Panza (with jalapeño-infused pisco—yum!) and Omied got the Close But No Cigar. Both were delicious.
We enjoyed several tapas and split an entree so that we could try a bunch of different things between the two of us. A couple standouts were the potato croquette with caviar and the cheese fritters with honey (omg I could have just ordered more plates of both of these and had delicious fried tapas for dinner—they were SO good).
We shared the steak entree, which was perfectly cooked, and then ended things on a sweet note with their churros.
Dinner here was seriously amazing, but I could also see The Commissary being the perfect spot for drinks and tapas.
The Commissary is open for dinner hours (no lunch) every day but Sunday, and you can reserve a table on their website!
