What to know about renting a designer bag, by fashion blogger What The Fab

One of my favorite ways to enhance an outfit is with a luxury handbag, but if you don’t feel like dropping thousands, renting a designer bag is a great alternative.

In the past few years, designer bag rental services have been popping up everywhere and gaining popularity among fashion lovers on a budget.

Renting, rather than purchasing, a designer handbag lets you try trendy accessories without making a substantial financial commitment.

Taking a designer handbag on a trial run also helps you decide if you want to invest in buying the piece for yourself.

Whether you’ve been eyeing the Louis Vuitton Monogram Leather Tote Bag or the iconic Birkin Bag, these rental companies offer all the bags of your dreams.

While it might sound too good to be true, I’m here to spill everything you need to know about renting a designer tote, shoulder handbag, satchel bag, or crossbody bag—whatever your heart desires!

A few companies offer services to rent designer handbags, but how do you decide between all the options?

After reading many customer reviews and testing a few, I’ve narrowed down the top sites that let you borrow designer bags on a budget.

Tips for renting designer bags, by fashion blogger What The Fab

Bag Borrow or Steal

Bag Borrow or Steal is one of the most popular places to rent top new arrivals from luxury brands like Prada and Bottega Veneta, and it’s been one of my go-to’s for years.

This Seattle-based company has been operating since 2004 and is killing the luxury handbag rental game, thanks to its curated collection of totes, clutches, hobo bags, and wallets.

Bag Borrow or Steal offers a one-month, no-commitment rental option that makes it easy to try a new style every month or stick with the same bag for an extended period.

Rental prices vary depending on the brand but typically range from $50 for mid-range designer labels like Michael Kors and Tory Burch to $500 or more for high-end brands like Louis Vuitton, Chanel, and Gucci.

Your luxury handbag will be delivered free of charge and look brand new since all rentals are professionally cleaned before each use.

When your rental is almost over, you’ll get a notification and can decide whether to return the bag for a new design or add it to your permanent wardrobe collection.

According to Bag Borrow or Steal’s policy terms, you’ll be responsible for the complete retail cost of the bag if it gets lost, stolen, or damaged while in your possession.

Damages requiring you to pay for the bag in full include interior or exterior stains, surface scuffs, and tears.

Rent the Runway

I’ve been using Rent the Runway to borrow tops, jackets, denim pieces, and more, but I only recently discovered they rent luxury handbags, too.

Rent the Runway has an impressive lookbook of items ranging from calfskin leather shoulder bags and clutch bags to mini pouches and weekender duffel bags from designers like Yves Saint Laurent, Burberry, and Balenciaga.

Rent the Runway offers three membership tiers ranging from 4-8 day periods to monthly and unlimited rentals.

Depending on your bag and rental plan, expect to pay anywhere from $50 to $800+.

I love how simple the Rent the Runway website is to navigate and that you can compare the different luxury rental service options before starting the checkout process.

If the designer purse is damaged during your rental period, you’ll be charged the total retail price—if the bag gets lost, stolen, or returned late, there will be a daily $50 fee for up to 20 days.

Vivrelle

For all my jewelry and designer bag lovers, Vivrelle is the perfect rental option. You can rent exclusive items from luxury brands like Louis Vuitton, Chanel, and Hermes.

The subscription-based membership service lets you rent designer handbags and fine jewelry for a starting price of $45 per month.

What I love about Vivrelle is that you can rent any item for as long as you want. If you love it, keep it until you want to switch things up!

The service operates on a tiered system which permits you to rent up to one piece from the high-end collection and one from the classic collection each month.

They offer free express and insured shipping for all of their items. This includes shipping both ways, so you don’t have to worry about shipping costs.

And all items come with standard insurance to protect you against everyday wear and tear.

If the bag is lost or stolen, you’ll need to contact customer service and provide the details about the incident, and they’ll then decide how much of the item will be covered under their insurance policy.

Switch

Switch is becoming a popular choice for renting luxury purses by designers like Chanel, Prada, and Louis Vuitton.

I’m a big fan of how straightforward Switch’s memberships work—choose from four plans and borrow any handbag or piece of jewelry for a flat monthly rate.

Prices start at $55 a month and go up to $295 a month, depending on how many items you want to try.

Two-day shipping is included in the monthly fee, and you can hold onto items as long as you like or purchase them if you fall in love.

The cherry on top is Switch covers regular wear and tear, so you don’t have to worry about minor scuffs or scratches.

If your item is lost, stolen, or overly damaged, you’ll have to pay Switch’s member price for that handbag or piece of jewelry.

Why drop thousands by purchasing a luxury purse when you can try renting a designer bag instead?
