What Causes Stretch Marks?
Most of us have heard about stretch marks at some point, but do you know what causes them to form?
Physical body changes, like gaining weight, can affect the collagen and elastin in your skin, causing a loss of elasticity that results in marks and scars.
Stretch marks occur because your skin rapidly stretches during pregnancy when your body expands to accommodate your growing baby.
While most pregnant women experience stretch marks on their belly, they can also occur on your arms, legs, breasts, and many other areas.
This process is natural, and there’s no scientific explanation for why some people are more prone to stretch marks than others.
Some studies say there’s no evidence that any oils, creams, or serums actually prevent stretch marks and that whether or not you get them is mostly based on weight gain and genetics.
But I figured I’d just do my best to try different products and at the very least keep my belly hydrated.
I started using belly oils preventatively once I hit the second trimester. Since then, I haven’t developed any stretch marks on my belly, and tbh I’m pretty darn big right now, so I do think that consistently using them helped to improve skin elasticity.
I did, however, get stretch marks on my boobs. They went up two cup sizes in like a month, so I think there was just no avoiding it, no matter how many serums and oils I slathered on.
After trying many brands and products, I’m here to share the best pregnancy stretch mark oils, including bonus recommendations for creams and serums!

8 Best Stretch Mark Oils, Serums, and Creams for Pregnancy
1. 8 Sheep Organics True Belly Serum 2-Step Stretch Mark Prevention Bundle
My all-time favorite stretch mark product during pregnancy has been the 2-Step Stretch Mark Prevention Bundle from 8 Sheep Organics.
This Stretch Mark Bundle includes an incredibly effective True Belly Serum and Immortelle Overnight Nourishing Balm formulated with pregnancy-safe, natural ingredients.
I’m trying to minimize toxins in my health and wellness routine, so I wanted a clean and gentle way to combat maternity stretch marks.
I also have an insane sense of smell during my pregnancy (it’s actually how I thought I was pregnant before the home test could even show up as positive!) and I’ve had to throw out some of the stretch mark creams I’ve tried because the fragrance was nauseating to me.
So I love that 8 Sheeps’ is fragrance-free. To me it smells like a Burt’s Bees product: very natural and mild.
I was so impressed when I found the True Serum—it doesn’t just sit on top of your skin but penetrates deep skin layers to improve elasticity.
Then, you layer on the Immortelle Balm to lock in the serum and boost your skin’s moisture.
The products are made with Centella Asiatica and hyaluronic acid, which prevent stretch marks and scars.
Since the True Serum and Nourishing Balm formulas are rich and creamy, a little product goes a long way.

2. Roe Wellness Belly Bundle
While this Belly Bundle is a splurge, it’s one of the best products for stretch mark prevention.
The Belly Bundle includes the Roe Wellness Hydrating Belly Serum and Stretch Mark Cream, which are incredible during and after pregnancy.
Use the Belly Serum first, massaging it into your hips, buttocks, thighs, breasts, and other body areas suffering from dry skin.
The Hydrating Serum has a clean formula containing the best oils for pregnancy, like sunflower, coconut, and jojoba.
Follow this with the Stretch Mark Cream, a luxurious body lotion that keeps skin elastic to reduce the appearance of stretch marks.
This Belly Bundle is a fantastic option if you have sensitive skin and want to avoid artificial fragrance ingredients and parabens.
3. Palmer’s Massage Lotion for Stretch Marks
This Massage Lotion is ideal for pregnant women because it contains the signature Palmer’s cocoa butter formula, which provides lasting hydration.
The Palmer’s Stretch Mark Lotion is gentle and soothing on dry, itchy skin, making it suitable for those prone to sensitivity and irritation.
Plus, you really can’t beat the price: under $7 on Amazon! Since it’s such a good pricepoint, I used this lotion on larger areas that I wasn’t as concerned about getting stretch marks because they didn’t seem to be getting bigger—my thighs and arms.
Collagen and elastin are the Massage Lotion’s key ingredients for restoring skin elasticity, while argan oil and shea butter lock in moisture.
Your skin will be noticeably smoother after regularly using this Lotion for Stretch Marks throughout pregnancy and postpartum.
Pair the lotion with Palmer’s Massage Oil for Stretch Marks, one of the best stretch mark oils for pregnancy under $20.
4. Bio-Oil Skincare Oil
