When I think of the ocean, I think of my dad. My love for water and appreciation for sea creatures stems from him teaching me how to snorkel in Hawaii at a very early age. Since he’s an avid diver, I always felt safe with him by my side, even if we were swimming out into deep, open waters. One of my favorite diving memories with him was when we had just finished up snorkeling and were getting back on land. We looked behind us and saw a pod of dolphins about a couple hundred yards out. He asked me if I thought I could swim out to them if he was with me and I said, “Of course!” I never would have swam out there by myself, but with my dad with me I felt totally confident. We dove back in the water and made our way out to the pod. When we finally found them, we realized they were spinner dolphins, and we watched them play and spin underwater, jumping out over the surface. One even swam up to us to greet us and check us out.
